TRANSAMAZONICA CHALLENGE

It all started when in 2007 a Jeep-owner and ardent off-road enthusiast from Brazil organized a 30 days and 15.000km expedition for his friends through Peru, Bolivia, Chile and Argentina. This first big adventure proved to be an absolute success and turned out to be the first step in realizing a childhood dream, namely organizing an adventure expedition in the Amazon region, similar to the famous Camel Trophy.

In 2008, following the footsteps of the 1989 Camel Trophy ‚Amazon‘ event  Sergio R. Delgado Holanda   and twelve other participants from Brazil traveled altogether 10.000km in 28 days along. The expedition began in Recife and followed the route number 230 toward Maraba, an old road through central Amazonia that became overgrown and impassable in the 1980s. It is also called the Amazon’s highway to hell.

News spread quickly over the Internet about the successful expedition, so immediately after returning from this adventure, Sergio received proposals from off road enthusiast who wanted to join the next expedition in 2009. This time he planned to take twelve participants with five vehicles on a 32 days trip covering 13.000km from Recife to Manaus. He was also contacted by a number of companies selling off road accessories and finally concluded cooperation agreements with the Brazilian representatives of the Ironman, ARB, Hi-Lift and WARN.

The participants of the 2010 TAC were scheduled to meet on 14. March at Le Point. The 25 participants and 12 vehicles will cover 10.000km in just 30 days. The expedition cross' a famous tin mining region, spend two rest days at the seaside resort Alter do Chao. After that they would take the TransUruara, a road most used by wood loggers in the rain forest. This year's adventures will end in Maraba in the state of Para.

According to the organizers the 2010 TAC is a prelude for their 2011 project Branches of Hell which will revive the true spirit of the Camel Trophy with a 5 days survival expedition in the rainforest of Brazil. Currently already more than 10 teams from Angola, Portugal, United Kingdom, Argentina, Brazil and Colombia have announced their intention to participate in the adventure.
